Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is a collection of symptoms that affect many people who experience, either personally or as a witness, severe trauma, including events like physical abuse, sexual abuse, and combat-related situations, to name a few. People who suffer from PTSD, approximately 8% of Americans, simply feel like they will never be able to escape the trauma; they often relive it through recollections both day and night.
Some of the core symptoms of PTSD include the following:
- Recurrent, intrusive thoughts of the event
- Recurrent nightmares
- A sense of reliving the event
- Recurrent emotional distress
- Tension and/or irritability
- Difficulty sleeping or feeling rested
- Feeling sad, depressed, or less interested in usual activities
- Withdrawing from other people
- Actively avoiding any reminders of the event, including thoughts, people, and places
If you have five or more of these symptoms, there is a very good possibility that you may have PTSD. These symptoms may be caused by other medical conditions, and prescription and non-prescription medications, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse may make these symptoms worse.
